Do I call the police and chase them down with my gun to kill
George Zimmerman Should Not Be Protected By The Controversial Stand Your Ground Law
Trayvon Martin, age seventeen was shot dead in late February. That is not up for dispute. That George Zimmerman, age 28, a self appointed captain of the neighborhood watch in a gated community did the shooting is also not up for debate. Zimmerman freely admits that he shot young Trayvon that night but says that he did so as "self defense" under the controversial Stand Your Ground law enacted in Florida in 2008. But, what is up for debate and may be critical to an eventual criminal case against Zimmerman and the Sanford police department are the other details, including whether or not Zimmerman had been a ticking time bomb of racially charged intent just waiting for his time to come.
Zimmerman had allegedly made no less than forty six 911 calls to the Sanford Police department in the months preceding the fatal shooting, most frequently reporting a suspicious black male in the area. In the 911 call from the night of the shooting Zimmerman tells dispatch that he was watching a suspicious dude who appeared to be walking slowly and appeared to be checking the houses out. He called the man "strange" and told dispatch that he thought he might be on drugs or something. While giving directions to dispatch for where the police should meet him, he started breathing heavily. The dispatcher asked if he was chasing the man and then told Zimmerman that no one needed him to do so. But, Zimmerman who had already used several expletives in the conversation said that "they always get away".
There is some question about whether parts of the 911 call were cleaned up by the Sanford Police who did not immediately release them. The family had to sue to get the tapes from the department's chief. At issue in a newer copy of the tape is whether or not Zimmerman made use of a racial slur. Trayvon was also on the phone at the time of the incident, with his girlfriend, a conversation that could well debunk a number of Zimmerman's claims including that Martin was walking slowly and appeared to be on drugs. According to the girlfriend, Martin had told her that someone was following him and was running away.
Former Senator Durell Peaden, who wrote the bill in question says that without a doubt, Zimmerman should be charged with a crime because once he got out of his car and pursued Trayvon, he lost the protection of stand your ground. George Zimmerman should be charged with murder, and there is no way that he can claim that we was acting in self defense when HE pursued TRAYVON after HE was INSTRUCTED NOT TO DO SO and HE was the one with a gun. Any unarmed non-special forces military trained man would not be a match for another man with a gun. They guy with the gun is almost always in total control of the situation! Trayvon was only armed with a bag of skittles and a can of tea. It bothers me because I'm a father, so I could only image the pain that Trayvon's family feels, but its quite possible that George Zimmerman will remain free.
This is an extremely senseless, unnecessary and tragic situation, that could have totally been avoided without question. It is a horrible situation, but there is a lot more that I have found out about the case. The police chief has stepped down for now (and should still be fired as well as held accountable) but someone who lives in that community spoke about a meeting they had had about Zimmerman. The did not want him to be part of the neighborhood watch in the first place and they would have never allowed him to be the captain. He was a ticking time bomb just waiting for his chance to shoot someone. He makes me sick. By the way, is that your son in your profile picture? He is adorable, I love the smile!

Well my my my, I didn't know the part about Zimmerman's neighbors' conducting a meeting because they did not want him to be a part of the neighborhood watch, and I also agree that he was a ticking time bomb. I have been watching every video and reading any and everything related to this case, because for me, Trayvon's death hits home on so many levels.
I live in Florida as well, I am a father, I live in a gated community, I'm under 30 , I have a concealed carry permit; and I carry my 9mm everywhere I go. None of these facts makes me a criminal, actually quite the contrary. We also have a neighborhood watch program, and all of my neighbors pretty much know each other and we are all typically aware of our surroundings (I would like to think) and you can pretty much tell when someone stands out in our neighborhood, and does not belong, and when I say "does not belong" I say that in the sense that those individuals and their cars that stand out are merely visiting, and are not residents. You live somewhere long enough you can pretty much tell who lives where and drives what, and who their kids are.
Now, I say all this to say, I see strangers and vistors, and even potentially suspicious looking people in my GATED COMMUNITY all of the time. Do I call the police and chase them down with my gun to kill them? No! Almost always those individuals are minding their business, as they should, I should, and everyone else should. Yes, we should keep an eye out for any suspicious activity, and look out for one another, but that's it! If I see something that is totally not right, I'll call the police. I'll ONLY use deadly force if my life, the lives of my family members, or those around me lives' are in immediate danger and that threat presents itself to me in a manner that would constitute deadly force. Otherwise, no one would ever even know that I have a gun. Period.
The only reason I carry a gun now is because I was robbed at gunpoint and carjacked a few years back while visiting my mother in my hometown; up to that point owning a gun was the farthest thought from my mind. I felt like I would never, ever need one. EVER. But when that happened, and I had a child and wife to protect whose lives mean more to me than mine, I decided to get licensed and purchase a firearm. Everyone who has a gun is not mentally capable and of a sound mind to carry one, as I believe this was the case with Zimmerman.
I'm young, I'm black, I wear hoodies and jeans and sneakers, I was raised within the hip hop culture/era, I walk to the convenience store outside of my gated community for snacks as well from time to time. God forbid I would ever run into Zimmerman or someone like him! This could have been me!
The "stand your ground" law works both ways, and even though it does not apply to this case, I don't understand why it's under so much scrutiny. Zimmerman cannot claim self defense. I majored in law in college, but I don't practice. I guess i'm too much of a hippy and my passion for a career in music took over lol! But sure as hell Trayvon could have claimed self defense. He was pursued at night by a stranger who followed him in a SUV and chased him down, and if Trayvon had a gun, this story would have played out so much differently. And he would probably have been crucified for shooting and killing Zimmerman, the lowly and humble self appointed neighborhood watch captain who volunteered himself, and only wanted to assure the safety of his neighbors.
Bottom line is, this sucks, Zimmerman was wrong, the Sanford police department were negligent and potentially racism played a role in the handling of this situation and their actions as well, and they all need to be brought to justice. Never in my life have I heard of a shooting taking place, whether self defense or otherwise, and no one was questioned. Even in the ghetto, residents and witnesses are questioned when shootings take place. So, in this lovely gated community, I would have guessed that the police would have remained there all night, canvassing and securing the perimeter and allowing the crime scene unit to do their thing. It appears that this never happened. It was days even before Trayvon was identified, even though the police had his cell phone and belongings! It's ludicrous to say the least.
I apologize for this extremely long reply, but I'm truly touched by this chain of events, for the reasons that I stated earlier. Racism is a very ugly thing, and its as thick as the Florida humidity down here. Not all white people are racists, and not all black people are thugs. Fools come in all shapes, ethnicities, colors, and sizes. Zimmerman is the perfect example of this! All I can do is pray for the best and live my life in a manner pleasing to God, and teach my son and anyone else that I can directly influence to do the same. My best friend is a white guy, and outside of our skin color, we are the same person. We're the same age, we got married the same year, our sons were born months apart, we share the same interests. We talk about how unfortunate it is the people just are so color struck and fearful. I just don't get it. But even though my friend and I are esentially the same person, economic status and all, he will never experience racism in that aspect, where he is walking through his gated community and questioned as to who he is and why is he there.
