Khreshchatyk and Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti)
2012-03-21 04:42:00 (читать в оригинале)Khreshchatyk is the main street of Kiev with the length of more than 1 km. The street starts from the European Square, and ends – at Bessarabska Square.
The history of the street can be divided into two parts: before the XIX century and after. Until the XIX century the street was built up by small three-and four-storied buildings, which stood as the single unbroken facade, its width were 35 meters. After the number of buildings, rebuildings and replacing a lot of names, street finds its final shape only in 1837, and in 1869 it receives it current name - Khreshchatyk.
With the start of the Great Patriotic War and the occupation of Kiev by Nazi invaders, Khreshchatyk experienced its most tragic days. In September 1941, on the main street of the city there detonated ammunition laid down by the NKVD during the retreat. The powerful explosion and fire practically burned the whole center of Kiev. The decision to rebuild the street was taken only after the war. Configuration remained the same, but the buildings were built in entirely new style of Stalin's Empire. The street extended to 75 meters, there were planted world-famous Kiev chestnut trees.
At Khreshchatyk Street there are Ukrainian House, Bessarabskiy market, Kiev city council and Kiev mayor's office, Central Department Store, the main post office. Street crosses the main square of Kiev -Independence Square, known in Ukraine as Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The square has become world famous after the events of 2004, called the Orange Revolution, "manifestation of the will of the people", which led to the third round of elections and the coming to power of President Viktor Yushchenko.
History of Maidan starts from the time of Yaroslav the Wise, when there are placed the fortifications and gates that had carried the name Lyadski, which were almost completely destroyed during the siege of Kiev. On the place of location of ancient gates there is now a copy, which is a historical monument of the Ukrainian capital city.
Having changed a lot of names, current name and shape of the modern Independence Squarewere acquired only with obtaining the status of the independent Ukrainian state. After the reconstruction and restructuring of the square there appeared the fountain, new monuments, a magnificent white tower, which symbolizes the independence of Ukraine. Under the square there is the largest shopping center "Globus", offering people of Kiev and visitors the plenty of entertainment and great products.
Assumption (Uspensky) Cathedral – the Main Temple of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra
2012-03-21 04:41:00 (читать в оригинале)The main temple of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra – Assumption Cathedral (Uspensky Cathedral) is located in the centre ofKiev, the capital of Ukraine, in front of the Saint Gates, in the middle of the central square of the Upper Lavra. This temple, one of the most ancient in Kievan Rus, has a special place in the life of Orthodox Church and in native culture. Its creation started a new stage in the history of Old Russian architecture and icon-painting. According to the tales of Nestor the Chronicler, the stone church Uspenia was based in 1073.
The foundation and building of the temple was accompanied with a number of miraculous events, showing God’s grace and intercession of Mother of God, who is the celestial patron of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The place for the building was pointed by divine signs to st. Antoniy. The land and 100 grivnas of gold were sacrificed by prince of Kiev Svyatoslav. The great contribution in the building was performed by voivode Shimon (Simon).
The building works of Assumption Cathedral started in1075. In the creating of the church’s plan and in the making of the basis took part the Byzantine architects called by the Virgin Mary. According to the tales of Paterik the money for the building were enough for three years. The erection of the temple was finished in 1077.
15 years later in 1088 the Assumption Cathedral was ready for the consecration. It was notable for the unusual grandeur and the beauty of the inner and outer decoration. Its walls and iconostasis shone with gold and many-colored mosaic and were decorated with a number of icons, the floor was made of the different kinds of stone, the top of the temple was gilded and the Christ on the cupola was forged of gold. The Greek icon-painters adorned Assumption Cathedral. The consecration took place in 1089 and was timed for the holiday of Uspenia of the Virgin Mary.
There was not the church in Old Russia so honored as the Great Church of Pechersk. All major sacred objects of Lavra were kept in the Great Church. Assumption Cathedral has been restored for many times. The profound reconstructions took place in 1729, 1755 and 1893. In 1941 the temple was destroyed and was renewed only in 2000.
Till 1941 the iconostasis in Assumption Cathedral belonged to the times of hetman Skoropadsky (1708-1722) which had a great artistic value. The icon of Assumption, of Pechersk saints and other were covered with gorgeous images. The tsar’s gates were forged of silver with gilding. All these were created by Lavra jewelers, who were famous equally to the painters and carvers. Under the floor of the Great Church there were buried many Russian princes, hetmans, Kiev voevodes (voevoda – the head of army in Kiev Rus), bishops, metropolitans and archimandrites.
8, 514 kg of the leaf gold were spent for the gilding of Christ and cupolas during the renovation of Assumption Cathedral.

Andrew's Descent in Kiev
2012-03-21 04:40:00 (читать в оригинале)In every city there is an old street, in whose lives there are inextricably united reality and history, fantasy and reality. This living history in Kiev is Andrew's Descent. The name of the street is associated with the presence of the Apostle Andrew in Kiev Mountains. The legend ascribes to him the prophecy about the appearance of the city here, which will play the greatest role in the history of the Slavic peoples.
St. Andrew's Church on the street of the same name in Kiev was founded by Empress Elizabeth, as thankful for the meeting with the future Count Razumovsky, who became her husband. It was built on the draft by Rastrelli in 1753. The successfully selected location on the hill makes it visible from the low-lying Podil and neighbouring mountains. According to legend this was the place, where Andrew set up the cross, prophesied about the future of Kiev. There had always stood wooden churches.
Moreover legend says that in the valley, where now runs theDnieper, there was the sea, which vanished away, but some of it is hidden under the mount, and since then there is a spring, hidden under the altar of the temple. For the same reason, the church has no bells, because with the first hit of the bell, the water may go out to the surface and fill all the Left Bank.
Modern Andrew Descent, as well as French Montmartre and Moscow's Arbat, are rich in artists, who exhibit their works here: paintings, glass and ceramics, wooden figurines, jewellery, toys and more. There are official art salons and galleries on Andrew’s Descent. Here are songs and performing artists of different genres.
On Andrew’s Descent there is quite a diverse choice of cafes. The atmosphere differs from the street bustle of everyday life, it is more like the smooth and fairly quiet atmosphere of the last century. And in the house numbered 13 locates the Museum of Mikhail Bulgakov. He lived in this house.
One can not ignore the Museum of one street. Of course - this is Andrew's Descent, its story in photos, pictures and other objects of different times.
If you are tired of impressions, then you can relax in a shady park, where are also exhibited the creative works of sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze.

Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater
2012-03-20 06:18:00 (читать в оригинале)The building of the Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the greatest architectural monuments of Ukraine and one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. Opera is a real jewel of Odessa, which worthy enters the list of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. Learn more about this monument of architecture and art.
The history of Odessa Opera Theater starts since the foundation of Odessa. It was built in 1809 according to design of the French architect Thomas de Thomon. In 1873 the theater was completely burned, this was a tragedy for the city, but fortunately there were no human casualties. 11 years after the fatal fire, the Odessa Opera Theater began to be built anew. At this time the construction was carried out under the leadership of the Viennese architects F. Felner and H. Helmer. And the opening of the new theater was held on October 1, 1887.
Odessa Opera Theater is famous primarily for its architecture, and is one of the best in Europe due to its planning and technical data. The building itself is constructed in the style of the Viennese "baroque", which was the major stile in European art since the end of 1916 to mid-18th century. Above the facade there towers a group of sculptures depicting one of the Muses – Protectress of the Art Melpomene. She sits in a chariot, harnessed with four furious panthers. Downstairs, near the main entrance, there are two groups of sculptures on high pedestals embodying the comedy and tragedy: on the left - a fragment of the tragedy of Euripides “Hippolytus", on the right - the episode of the comedy by Aristophanes “Birds”. Across the pediment of the building one can see the busts of brilliant creators of Russian Literature and Art: Pushkin, Glinka, Griboyedov, Gogol, who embody the poetry, music, drama and comedy.
But the most beautiful part of the building is the auditorium. Similar to the interior of the theatre, the hall corresponds to the slogan: “Golden content for the gold form”. It is created in the style of Louis 16 - "rococo". Everything inside is created in harmony with each other: dome, columns, arches, sculptures, reliefs, candles and candlesticks, gilding, which is very nice combined with white, beige and warm cream-colored walls and ceilings. On the ceiling there are paintings - scenes from famous works of Shakespeare. And the huge luxurious crystal chandelier seems to tower over everything, weighing about 2 and half tons. The seats and boxes are covered with dark red velvet; mirrors are in gilt frames. In combination with the beautiful music all this is just a delight!
