Evenings: "Friend (Lover)"

2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)

Nathan Broadus, who produces under the name Evenings, has just been signed to Friends of Friends. His first single from the upcoming LP Yore, "e;Friend (Lover)"e;, finds him exploring the hi-fi, sample-happy sheen that FOF’s producers favor. The track does most of its work in the midst of a repetitive sample, but there’s an intricacy to the shifting drum patterns, which show off Broadus’s talent for small-scale manipulation. For proof of his micro-vision, skip to the bridge at 1:45, where an array of alternately spacious and shuffling percussion arrangements in the span of a minute grant the track a breadth that it couldn’t have attained with only a simple, well-chosen sample.

The Underachievers: "T.A.D.E.D."

2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)

While New York rap culture's borders have always been porous, over the last few years its participants have reinvented the city's scene as omnivorous, drawing inspiration from outside as much they do from within. Case in point: Brooklyn duo the Underachievers (who recently signed to Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label) flow like they're from the Midwest and grew up listening to a ton of Southern rap. Their debut mixtape, Indigoism, was released a few days ago, and "e;T.A.D.E.D."e; (which stands for "e;Trippy All Day Every Way"e;) is one of its many highlights.

Indebted to the hazy hallucinations of Clams Casino, "e;T.A.D.E.D."e; approaches the clouds but remains tethered to the ground by a heavy, mutating lower-end. It's the perfect setting for Issa Dash and Ak's blend of stoner mysticism and curled-lip smacktalking. Although you can trace their influences with ease-- the chopped-and-screwed passages are ripped straight from A$AP Rocky's playbook, and the way Issa leans into his vowels on the hook recalls Kanye's exaggerated drawl-- their stitchwork is impressive. They rap with a coiled energy that unravels with the ferocity of youth, and they're as adept at navigating tight corners as they are wide straightaways. So when the brakes are applied and the hook appears, it's both a chance to suck in air and a mission statement.

Dick Diver: "Water Damage"

2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)

Dick Diver are a four-piece from Melbourne, and like their Chapter Music labelmates the Twerps, they're a great jangle pop band. "e;Water Damage"e; is the first single from their upcoming album Calendar Days, out March 16. It's a gentle, unassuming track that starts with an atmospheric coo and sticks the landing with some beautiful, airy guitar work from Rupert Edwards. Soon, Edwards trades off vocal duties drummer Steph Hughes, as they both sing some conversational verses outlining a vulnerable scene. At one point, Edwards thinks he's recognized somebody in the movie he's watching, but mid-verse, can't remember the actor's name. The tone is probably similar to the feeling of hanging out in Dick Diver's living room, which feels appropriate for a song with such a relaxing approach.

Dungeonesse: "Shucks"

2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)

In recent years, Jon Ehrens has experimented with dance pop as part of White Life, but with new project Dungeonesse, he's achieved further artistic growth. Hearing his new single with Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), "e;Shucks"e;, is like listening in on a conversation between two newly-romantic young teens. From the clean, syncopated beats to singer Jenn Wasner’s pleasant voice, the song is a top-shelf example of sugary pop. The lyrics are easygoing yet confident, when Wasner breaks from her singing to say, "e;I know it doesn’t look like much, but it’s love, and I know that it’s good enough."e; It's a truly sweet single with a melody that smacks of 1990s teen-pop singers like Mandy Moore and Stacie Orrico.

Rachel Zeffira: "The Deserters"

2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)

As the opening title track to Rachel Zeffira's debut album, "e;The Deserters"e; offers, by way of introduction, a farewell: "e;One day, we'll meet again/ One day, we'll speak like we did back then,"e; she sings to a soon-to-be-ex or frenemy, though those forlorn words are delivered in a calm voice that suggests a certain contentment with letting fate take its course. It's a philosophy that could easily be applied to Zeffira's own nomadic path, both geographically (she was born in Canada, lives in London, but first stepped into the spotlight at the Vatican) and musically.

Though Zeffira's a formally trained opera singer, the sort of candelabra-lit chamber-pop she's released-- as one half of Horrors offshoot Cat's Eyes and now under her own name-- is refreshingly bereft of glass-shattering histrionics. There's a soft-seater stateliness to "e;The Deserters"e; that hints at Zeffira's past pursuits, with the singer's daydreamy coo cascading atop a rolling piano line and regal woodwind refrain. But the song floats gently up to the rafters rather than hurl itself toward the back rows-- a gentle breeze that nonetheless gradually accrues the magnitude of a tornado-sized swirl.
