Leech: "Tusks"

Los Angeles denizen Brian Foote is involved in so many musical endeavors it's hard to keep track of them all. There's his membership in the long-running ensembles Nudge and Fontanelle; his running of labels Audraglint, Peak Oil, and Ecstasy; and his day job at the veteran imprint Kranky. But one pursuit is solely his: the electronic, beat-oriented solo project he calls Leech. It's a name he's used for eight years for DJ gigs and compilation appearances, but the forthcoming Tusks 12"e; on 100% Silk is his first official release.

"e;Tusks” opens the four-song EP with a somewhat minimalist groove, as Foote's pointed beat cuts through synth lines and voice samples. Then, as the track gathers momentum, it becomes increasingly dense, with a swarm of sounds circling the beat and reflecting around the stereo space. Yet even when the pulse quickens and the atmosphere thickens, there's still lots of space and air between Foote's precise moves. So as complex as "e;Tusks” gets, it's grounded in rhythmic simplicity, and Foote never lets your ears lose track of Leech's razor-sharp beat.
