Mogwai: "Wizard Motor"

2013-02-09 20:18:00 (читать в оригинале)

The decision to use Mogwai’s music as the soundtrack to a moody, touching ghost story isn't a difficult one to make. "e;Wizard Motor"e; is an evocative piece, flooded with loss and pain. It’s taken from the band’s score for "e;Les Revenants"e;, a French TV series set in a remote mountain town where children who were killed in a bus crash mysteriously return to life. Mogwai's best work either carries a strong emotional heft or straight out nihilistic thrills, and they're in the former mode here, mapping out a great plain of hurt chiseled from ultra-compressed guitar lines, stepping back from the distorted fury their tracks often build into.

Still, "e;Wizard Motor"e; bears a familiar cadence, starting quietly and subtly climbing to a more substantial space. That space is vast, but when Mogwai do "e;big"e;, they’re able to drag a truckload of sentiment along with them, retaining an element of humility that could easily get lost in such cavernous surroundings. It’s difficult to imagine how this fits with the show for which it was composed, mainly because it feels like an entity all to itself. But, like the best soundtrack work, "e;Wizard Motor"e; has a dual purpose, forging connections within the world it was created for and gathering a weight of its own when detached from that creation.

Mogwai: "e;Wizard Motor"e; on SoundCloud.
