Microscopy of the umbilical cord of rock cavies—Kerodon rupestris Wied, 1820 (Rodenta, Caviidae)

ABSTRACTThe rock cavies (Kerodon rupestris) are rodents belonging to family Caviidae, with habitat restricted to northeastern Brazil. Current studies have shown that blood cord has stem and hematopoietic cells both with a high regenerative potential, microscopic studies about the description in rodents and other mammals are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the structural components of the umbilical cord of rock cavies. Rock cavies embryos at different stages of pregnancy were used, three in the first third, five in middle third, and six in the final third of gestation. They were obtained at the Centre for Wild Animals Multiplication of Federal Rural University of Semi‐Arid. Epidemiology of pneumococcal serotype 6A and 6C among invasive and carriage isolates from Alaska, 1986–2009

Abstract: We investigated serotype 6A/6C invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) incidence, genetic diversity, and carriage before and after 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) introduction in Alaska. IPD cases (1986–2009) were identified through population-based laboratory surveillance. Isolates were initially serotyped by conventional methods, and 6C isolates were differentiated from 6A by polymerase chain reaction. Among invasive and carriage isolates initially typed as 6A, 35% and 50% were identified as 6C, respectively. A new gas system for automated in situ powder diffraction studies at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility

A new gas dosing rig built for the high-resolution powder diffraction beamline (ID31) at the ESRF is described. The rig is fully controlled and monitored by the beamline control software, enabling automated absorption and desorption of fixed pressures of gases up to 100 bar (107 Pa) for in situ structural studies. The rig has successfully been used on ID31 as well as other beamlines at the ESRF. (Source: Journal of Applied Crystallography)
