Contributions of a specialty clinic for children and adolescents with Down syndrome

AbstractWe investigated what added value, if any, a Down syndrome specialty clinic brings to the healthcare needs of children and adolescents with Down syndrome. For this quality improvement study, we performed a retrospective chart review of 105 new patients with Down syndrome, ages 3 and older, seen during the inaugural year of our specialty clinic. We asked how many of our patients were already up‐to‐date on the healthcare screenings recommended for people with Down syndrome. We further analyzed what tests we ordered, which referrals we suggested, and, ultimately, what new diagnoses of co‐occurring medical conditions were made. Letter to the Editor regarding “Middle ear fluid characteristics in otitis media with effusion: Concern for fluid analysis”

The recent report on middle ear fluid characteristics in otitis media with effusion is very interesting . Dodson et al. concluded that “The best mucociliary transportability was measured in mucopurulent effusions ”. Indeed, there are many concerns on body fluid analysis including to middle ear fluid analysis in laboratory medicine. As Dodson et al. observed in their experiment, the transportability was different in the group with the first and repeated procedures. It should be noted that the fluid collection procedure is referred as a pre-analytical phase in laboratory quality cycle. The good collection technique is very important. In any analysis, the error in pre-analytical phase especially for the specimen collection is very high and this can result in aberration of final laboratory...

Chronic fatigue syndrome 5 years after giardiasis: differential diagnoses, characteristics and natural course

Background:A high prevalence of chronic fatigue has previously been reported following giardiasis after a large waterborne outbreak in Bergen, Norway in 2004. The aim of this study was to describe and evaluate differential diagnoses and natural course of fatigue five years after giardiasis among patients who reported chronic fatigue three years after the infection.Methods:Patients who three years after Giardia infection met Chalder's criteria for chronic fatigue (n=347) in a questionnaire study among all patients who had laboratory confirmed giardiasis during the Bergen outbreak (n=1252) were invited to participate in this study five years after the infection (n=253).
