A powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake set off a tsunami that killed 13 people in a remote part of the Solomon Islands. This amateur video shows destroyed houses along the coastline near the town of Lata, located on the remote Santa Cruz Island. The tsunami triggered evacuations across the South Pacific, including New Zealand and Australia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said the quake struck 211 miles east of Kira Kira in the Solomons. The center issued warnings for the Solomons and other South Pacific nations including Australia and New Zealand. It later cancelled the warnings for the outlying regions. A tsunami measuring almost five feet swamped some villages and the town's main airport near Lata as people fled to higher ground. On Friday, the latest aftershock—an earthquake with a preliminary 6.6 magnitude—struck 412 miles east of the Solomon Islands. The US Geological Survey said the quake was 6.2 miles deep and located southeast of Kira Kira. There was no immediate tsunami warning.
