YOUTUBE Vada Pav, the King of Mumbai

2013-02-18 14:40:00 (читать в оригинале)

Last week, I visited this ‘Pav Wow contest‘ which was to judge the best Vada Pav of the city of Mumbai. There were nearly 25 stalls of Vada pav who were short-listed from all over Mumbai.  Boosting their enthusiasm was the massive crowd of people who were crazily eating from all the stalls. Yes, all of them were selling Vada Pav but with little variations. That’s when I came to a conclusion that in terms of food, Vada Pav rules the city of Mumbai.  (I’m talking about Mumbai because I have made my observations in Mumbai only.) Be it Shiv-Vada, Jumbo King, Kunjavihar or any other local brand, no Mumbaikar says a “no” to Vada Pav. Period.

Mumbai has a cosmopolitan population. We can find any food dish here be it Idli-Dosa or Pav Bhaji or any international dish like hotdogs, burgers, pizzas etc., but nothing sells like Vada Pav. It is the one food item that dominates the heart (read: stomach) of every Mumbaikar.

I personally, would call this food as the lifeline of Mumbai. Be it the beggar on a footpath or a MBA professional in ‘suite-boot-tie’…no one says a “no” to this King of Mumbai! There are various reasons as to why Vada Pav has this status. Firstly, it can be savored by any age group of people, be it small kids, teenagers or middle-aged people, it is liked by all.

Secondly, it is very handy i.e. one can take a Vada Pav in one hand and continue to do his/her work. It’s like we see in New York, people with a hotdog in hand, heading towards their offices to start their day. We can see the same scene in Mumbai with people holding this in their hands running for their work.

The best part is that it’s the most affordable food dish on the Menu Card and it is very light on your wallet. A simple Vada Pav costs nothing more than Rs. 7/8 on an average, though it used to be for only Rs. 5 some years ago, but with the overall inflation one can’t help it. So its best suited for the wallets of college students. It may not be very healthy option every time, but once in a while…chalta hai!

In Mumbai, Vada Pav is also a source of income of a large group of people. The investment for setting up a stall is minimal and the returns are always better. One can set up a  Stall anywhere and get a huge response of customers streaming in at any hour of day or night, be it outside Railway Station or Bus Stop or a MNC building or College, there is always a demand for Vada Pav in Mumbai.

Globalization has affected everything and everyone and therefore Vada Pav is nothing different from it. Vada Pav is now portrayed as the ‘Indian Burger’. This has helped it gain international audience. Jumbo King-chain of Vada Pav shops has opened its centers in many parts of the world…so you can get a Vada Pav even in Switzerland! With the advent of these big Vada Pav chains like Jumbo King or Goli Vada Pav, apart from our typical Vada Pav we find this long list of flavoured Vada Pavs like Schezwan, Misal, Choley, Grill, Cheese and even Wheat-bread Vada Pav. Of course they cost somewhere between Rs. 15 to Rs. 30 but they do tingle our taste buds now and then.

So from being a local delicacy, Vada Pav is now a food item representing India on international level. Way to go Vada Pav!
