Cannabis use increased risk for stroke in young adults

Patients exhibiting ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack were 2.3 times more likely to have cannabis detected in urine tests than other age- and sex-matched patients, according to recent findings presented at the International Stroke Conference 2013.“This is the first case-control study to show a possible link to the increased risk of stroke from cannabis,” P. Alan Barber, PhD, MD, professor of clinical neurology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, said in a press release. “Cannabis has been thought by the public to be a relatively safe, although illegal, substance. This study shows this might not be the case; it may lead to stroke.”

The current policies to manage conflicts of interest among Medicaid drug selection committees are inconsistent, mismanaged and often are not transparent, according to a report published in JAMA.“Pharmaceutical companies promote their products by offering gifts, consultation fees, and honoraria to individual practitioners and researchers,” the researchers wrote. “These practices can have an impact on the therapeutic decision making because they skew the body of scientific evidence in favor of newer, more expensive, on-patent drugs.”

A school-based alcohol prevention program reduced the odds of drinking among high-risk students by 29%, according to study results published in JAMA Psychiatry.“Universal school-based prevention programs attempt to enhance resilience in young people by increasing knowledge about the harms of alcohol misuse and promote better coping skills among children and their parents,” the researchers wrote.

Obese adolescent girls face higher multiple sclerosis risk

Obese children and teenage girls may be at increased risk for developing multiple sclerosis or clinically isolated syndrome, according to study results published in Neurology. However, this association was not found in boys.Overweight girls’ risk for developing multiple sclerosis (MS) or clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) was 1.5 times higher than that in those who were not overweight (OR=1.58; 95% CI, 0.71-3.5). The OR was 1.78 for moderately obese girls vs. those of normal weight (95% CI, 0.7-4.49) and 3.76 in extremely obese girls (95% CI, 1.54-9.16).

Alcohol advertising may influence underage drinking

Exposure to televised alcohol advertisements is associated with underage drinking and problem behaviors related to drinking alcohol, according to results of a recent study.Jerry Grenard, PhD, and other researchers from the School of Community and Global Health at Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, Calif., recruited 3,890 seventh-grade students and surveyed them once a year for 4 years. To assess exposure to alcohol advertisements, students were asked how frequently they watched 20 popular television shows, and that frequency was weighted by the number of alcohol advertisements on those shows as reported by Nielson Media Research. Students were also asked whether they liked alcohol advertisements and a range of other questions about alcohol use.
