Many children with food allergies bullied

About half of the children participating in a recent survey who had been previously diagnosed with food allergies also reported being bullied.Eyal Shemesh, MD, chief of the division of behavioral and developmental health in the department of pediatrics and Kravis Children’s Hospital, and colleagues surveyed 251 pairs of parents and children who were consecutively recruited during routine allergy clinic visits. Bullying related to food allergy or for any cause, quality of life, and distress in both the child and parent were evaluated using validated questionnaires.

Angina not associated with CV events, death in diabetic patients

A post-hoc analysis of the BARI 2D trial found that patients with type 2 diabetes, stable CAD and documented myocardial ischemia were at similar risk for CV events and death regardless of whether they had angina, angina equivalents or were asymptomatic.The analysis included 2,364 patients with type 2 diabetes and documented CAD enrolled in the BARI 2D trial. The cohort had 1,434 patients with angina, 506 with angina equivalents and 424 with neither. All patients had suitable coronary anatomy for randomization into either PCI or CABG strata.

Diclofenac commonly used worldwide, despite CV risks

Diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, has been linked to MI and stroke risk in vulnerable patients, but new data show that it is widely prescribed worldwide, according to new research in PLoS Medicine.Patricia McGettigan, MD, from the William Harvey Research Institute, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, United Kingdom and David Henry, MBChB, MRCP, FRCP, from the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and the University of Toronto, Canada, studied Essential Medicines Lists obtained from the WHO that listed NSAID sales and prescription data for 15 low-, middle- and high-incomes countries.

Mortality, readmission rates not associated for MI or pneumonia

Among patients hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction or pneumonia, the mortality rates and readmission rates were not linked, according to recent data published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.“Our hypothesis was that these measures would not be strongly related because the factors that influence the risk of mortality are different from those that influence the risk of adverse events and readmission after discharge,” Harlan Krumholz, MD, Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, told Infectious Disease News. “The study should reassure hospitals and clinicians that doing well on mortality rates will not impose a disadvantage for readmission rates. We failed to find evidence that hospitals cannot excel on both.”

HHS proposes new guidelines for Medicaid, CHIP, health insurance marketplaces

New Affordable Care Act rules proposed this week by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius set guidelines for eligibility notices and appeals in Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program and Exchanges, plus give states additional operational flexibility for Medicaid programs.“Today, we are proposing a rule to provide Americans with access to affordable, high-quality health coverage and give states more flexibility to implement the law in a way that works for them,” Sebelius said in a press release.
