FDA clears mobile telemedicine robot for certain hospital settings

The FDA has given 510(k) clearance to a mobile telemedicine robot for active patient monitoring in certain hospital settings.The RP-VITA Remote Presence Robot, a joint effort between iRobot and InTouch Health, combines autonomous navigation with telemedicine and electronic health records. Designed to facilitate remote doctor-to-patient consults, the robot “maps its own environment and uses an array of sophisticated sensors to autonomously move about a busy space without interfering with people or other objects,” according to an iRobot press release.

Exposure to c-hGH did not increase risk for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s

Despite the growing body of evidence surrounding cell-to-cell exposure of neurodegenerative disease-associated proteins, researchers found that a group of patients who received cadaver-derived human growth hormone did not appear to be at increased risk for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease. The findings were published in JAMA Neurology. “To examine this issue, we first determined the potential exposure of cadaver-derived human growth hormone [c-hGH] recipients to non-prion protein neurodegenerative disease-associated proteins by evaluating sections of anterior (adenohypophysis) and posterior (neurohypophysis) human pituitary glands for the presence of pathological deposits of these disease proteins,” researcher David J. Irwin, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and colleagues wrote.

CAF and Össur Renew Partnership

Under the terms of a new 3-year agreement,Össur will continue to serve as the exclusive provider of prosthetic components to the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) and will sponsor a series of amputee mobility clinics. Össur will also serve as a sponsor for all of CAF's other sports clinics and of the San Diego Triathlon Challenge, a unique event that brings physically challenged and able-bodied athletes together each year at La Jolla Cove.

CMS issues final rule on Physician Payment Sunshine Act

CMS recently announced in a press release its final rule on the National Physician Payment Transparency Program: Open Payments, also known as the Sunshine Act, aimed to increase transparency among physicians, drug and device manufacturers and health care providers. As part of the Affordable Care Act, the rule calls for manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologics and medical supplies reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program to disclose payments made to doctors and teaching hospitals to CMS. According to the release, these manufacturers and group purchasing organizations must also report physician ownership and investments in these enterprises. This data will be publicly available on a CMS website by September 30, 2014, and entities required to report information under the rule will be able to review and correct reported data before it is released to the public. Collection of this information will begin August 1 of this year, according to the release.
