BLOG: Let the sun shine down - CMS releases final reporting requirements for manufacturers and GPOs

On Feb. 1, 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its long-awaited final rule regarding the implementation of the physician payment sunshine provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The final rule does not create any new prohibitions on payments to physicians and teaching hospitals, but rather sets out new dates and requirements for manufacturers and other entities to collect data about their payments to physicians and other “covered recipients” and submit that information to CMS. Applicable manufacturers and group purchasing organizations (GPOs) must begin to collect this data on Aug. 1, 2013 and report the data to CMS by March 31, 2014.

FDA releases guidelines for developing Alzheimer’s drugs

The FDA issued a proposal today to assist drug companies that are developing new treatments for patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.“The scientific community and the FDA believe that it is critical to identify and study patients with very early Alzheimer’s disease before there is too much irreversible injury to the brain,” Russell Katz, MD, director of the FDA’s division of neurology products, said in a press release. “It is in this population that most researchers believe that new drugs have the best chance of providing meaningful benefit to patients.”

Influenza deaths on the rise, ILI activity leveling off

Influenza activity has decreased in some areas of the United States, but overall, activity remains elevated throughout the country, the CDC reported.The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) was 4.3% for week 3, which ended on Jan. 19. The national baseline is 2.2%. Twenty-six states and New York City saw high ILI activity and all 10 US regions also reported ILI above region-specific baseline levels.

Neuromuscular Warm-Up May Reduce Lower Extremity Injuries in Adolescent Female Athletes

Female high school athletes who participated in neuromuscular warm-up before sports practice had a reduced risk of lower extremity injuries, according to a study in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.“In girls’ high school sports, injury rates per 1,000 athlete exposures are highest in soccer (2.36) and basketball (2.01),” the authors wrote as background information in the study. “Knee injuries are the most common cause of permanent disability in female high school basketball players, accounting for up to 91 percent of season-ending injuries and 94%of injuries requiring surgery.”

Study in Brain Flexibility Could Mean Advances for Neuroprosthetics

Neuroscientists at the University of California, Berkeley and the Champalimaud Center for the Unknown in Portugal have demonstrated that through brain plasticity, the same brain circuits used to learn motor skills can be used to master purely mental tasks as well, according to a press release.The study was conducted to investigate how the brain circuits used in natural movements could be used in the development of neuroprosthetics. Previous studies done on this topic have failed to prove that physical movement is not necessary to control a prosthetic device.
