Representative Stresses Importance of Communicating Effectiveness of Braces in Treatment of Knee OA

ORLANDO, Fla. – In 2006 Frost and Sullivan looked at the brace and support industry and said that osteoarthritis (OA) braces were the fastest growing segment of the brace market. According to a sales representative here, that is not a surprise. “We know the baby boomers are in their arthritis years, they are more active than previous older generations, they are heavier, their knees take a pounding and their numbers are going to continue to swell for a few more years. So, that is why Frost and Sullivan predicted there would be this surge in the knee brace business,” Thomas McGovern, co-owner of Heritage Medical said here at the 2010 American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association’s National Assembly. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years. I keep looking for this surge but I am not seeing it.”

Biennial mammograms offer older women the same benefits as annual screening while significantly reducing the likelihood of false-positive results, according to findings of a prospective population-based study.Previous studies have shown that patients with comorbidities have high mammography utilization rates. The appropriate screening frequency among older women — defined as those aged 65 years or older — remains unclear, according to background information in the study.

Brain Implant May Have Ability to Translate Thoughts Into Movement

A brain implant may eventually be used to reactivate paralyzed limbs. Euisik Yoon, University of MichiganA brain implant developed at the University of Michigan (UM) uses the body’s skin like a conductor to wirelessly transmit the brain’s neural signals to control a computer and may eventually be used to reactivate paralyzed limbs. “The implant is called the BioBolt and unlike other neural interface technologies that establish a connection from the brain to an external device such as a computer, it is minimally invasive and low power,” Euisik Yoon, principal investigator and professor in the UM College of Engineering, department of electrical engineering and computer science, stated in a press release.
