Financial Times: Today’s best sellers on Olena’s stall in Kiev, yards from floral tributes to protesters killed by Ukrainian state snipers during February’s anti-government protests, are toilet rolls with a difference.
Selling at 40 hryvnia (£1.80) for a pair, they come embossed with pen portraits of former president Victor Yanukovych, who fled during the protests, and the man whom the majority of Ukraine’s 46m inhabitants blame for the current crisis: Russian president Vladimir Putin.
“There is no competition,” says Olena, clad in a traditional Ukrainian embroidered blouse: Putin’s toilet paper outsells Yanukovych-branded rolls by at least three to one.

Снова про отца

After leaving Radley, Farve's dearest wish was to join the Army but he could manage only 19 marks out of 2,000, or so he told us, and he failed the entrance exam. Whether or not this unlikely score was the reason, history does not relate, but fail he certainly did and he oftn used to say to us, 'What good would Latin have been to me in the Army?'




My father… was famous for having read only one book, White Fang, which he enjoyed so much he vowed never to read another. When they were first married, my mother was shocked to realize that my father had read only one book. She persuaded him to listen to her reading aloud some classics, starting with Thomas Hardy. She chose Tess of the d’Ubervilles with its descriptions of farm and heath land, which she thought he would enjoy. When she got to the sad part, my father started crying. ‘Oh, darling, don’t cry, it’s only a story.’ ‘What,’ said my father, his sorrow turning to rage, ‘do you mean to say the damn feller made it up?’ I was born after the days of White Fang and never saw my father open a book.

Про няню

She did not criticize us much, neither did she praise. 'No, darling, I shouldn't do that if I were you,' or 'Very nice, darling,' was as far as it went, her eyes on her needle or the iron, the regular tools of the nursery. Signs of arrogance, conceit or vanity she called 'parading about' and discouraged them with a little sniff and cough. 'It's all right, darling, no one's going to look at you,' became her standard saying when we complained that our dresses were not smart enough for a party. She carried this dictum a bit far when Diana, eighteen years old and staggeringly beautiful in her wedding dress, said, 'Oh Nanny, this hook and eye doesn't work. It looks awful.' 'It's all right, darling,' Nanny soothed, 'who's going to look at you?'

I read now about the necessity of self-esteem in children. We would have become impossibly pleased with ourselves had we been indulged with such a thing. As it was, our ups and downs were high and low enough, and Nanny sat on any ups.

Правительство Кубы пообещало наказать фармацевтическую компанию Labiofam, которая в четверг представила новые одеколоны Ernesto и Hugo, названные в честь Че Гевары и Чавеса. Как сообщает ВВС, правительственное заявление было опубликовано в газете Granma. В нем затея с одеколонами была названа "серьезной ошибкой" и "безответственным деянием". "Символы Революции всегда будут священны", "Подобные инициативы всегда будут неприемлемы для нашего народа и Революционного правительства", и "За этой серьезной ошибкой последуют надлежащие меры".

25 сентября в ходе презентации новых запахов биохимик Labiofam Марио Вальдес заявил, что одеколоны были названы в честь Че и Чавеса не ради пропаганды. Компания хотела отдать им дань уважения и увековечить их имена таким вот образом. Вице-президент лаборатории Исабел Гонсалес сказала, что сами по себе одеколоны очень приятные, но и выбранные для них имена много значат для разработчиков. Семьи Чавеса и Че Гевары дали разрешение на использование их имен, заверила компания. На момент презентации Labiofam еще не создала фирменные флаконы для Ernesto и Hugo и не придумала дизайн этикеток. Видимо, и не понадобится.

В одеколоне Ernesto цитрусовые оттенки дополняют древесные, а у Hugo более мягкий и фруктовый запах с нотками манго и папайи.
