Oz Lotto

Oz Lotto was established in 1994 as Australia’s first fully national lotto game. It also holds the record for the largest ever Australian lottery prize, with four winners each taking a share of AU$111,972,151 in November 2012. Oz Lotto was initially played as a 6/45 game with five prize divisions, but in October 2005 an extra number was added to the winning line and two new prize tiers were created.

How to Play Oz Lotto

Draws for Oz Lotto take place on Tuesdays at 8.30pm AEST and the winning numbers are available to view soon after at the Oz Lotto Results page.

Players choose seven numbers from 1 to 45 and must match all seven numbers drawn on the night in order to win the Division 1 prize. Two more balls, referred to as Supplementary Numbers, are then chosen from the same pool and can boost a player’s winnings in certain prize tiers.

Oz Lotto Prizes

The game offers a guaranteed minimum Division 1 prize of AU$2 million, with a further six divisions available in which to win prizes:

Division

Numbers Required

Odds (One Game)
1st Match 7 1 in 45,379,620
2nd 6 + 1 or 2 Supplementary Numbers 1 in 3,241,401
3rd Match 6 1 in 180,078
4th 5 + 1 or 2 Supplementary Numbers 1 in 29,602
5th Match 5 1 in 3,430
6th Match 4 1 in 154
7th 3 + 1 or 2 Supplementary Numbers 1 in 87
Approximate overall odds of winning a prize: 1 in 55

If no player can match all seven main numbers, the Division 1 prize or ‘jackpot’, will be rolled over to the next draw. Oz Lotto does not have a cap or limit to the number of times the top prize can roll over, allowing it to grow to eight-figure sums in just a few draws.

Saturday Lotto

Lottery operators Tattersall’s have been running Saturday Lotto for over forty years, following the success of the very first draw on 24th June 1972.

While Saturday Lotto enjoys widespread recognition in New South Wales and Western Australia, the game is actually marketed under alternate names in different regions of Australia. In Queensland Saturday Lotto is known as Gold Lotto, in South Australia the game is referred to as X Lotto and in Victoria, Tasmania, ACT and the Northern Territory the game is known as the “TattsLotto”.

How to Play Saturday Lotto

Regardless of its name or the location in which it is played, Saturday Lotto always follows the same rules: players must choose six numbers from between 1 and 45. In the draws, six main numbers are drawn first followed by two supplementary numbers. To win the jackpot, a player must match all six main numbers.

Saturday Lotto Prizes

Saturday Lotto prizes are calculated on a pari-mutuel basis, which means they are dependent upon ticket sales and the number of winners in a given division. The six prize tiers, along with their odds of winning and the percentage of the prize pool they each receive, are shown in the table below:

Division

Winning Combinations

Odds (Based on One Game*)

Prize %
1st Match 6 1 in 8,145,060 28%
2nd Match 5 + 1 or 2 Supplementary Numbers 1 in 678,755 3.8%
3rd Match 5 1 in 36,689 8.2%
4th Match 4 1 in 733 12.4%
5th Match 3 + 1 or 2 Supplementary Numbers 1 in 297 20.8%
6th Match 1 or 2 + 2 Supplementary Numbers 1 in 144 26.8%
Approximate overall odds of winning a prize: 1 in 85

*The minimum play for TattsLotto is four games.

Every Saturday Lotto jackpot is worth a minimum of AU$4 million, but if there is no jackpot winner in any given week, the top prize will roll over and increase in value for the following draw. However, the Saturday Lotto jackpot can only roll over for a maximum of four times, and if there are still no top tier winners in the fifth draw the Division 1 prize pool will roll down to be shared among the winners in Division 2.

Powerball

Australia Powerball was launched by Tattersall’s in May 1996 and was designed to give Australian lottery players the chance to win substantially bigger prizes than those available in other games played across the country. It is currently operated by a number of major lottery operators in various regions, including New South Wales Lotteries, Tattersall’s, Golden Casket, South Australian Lotteries Commission and Lottery West.

The largest Powerball Division 1 prize to date was worth AU$80 million and was split between two ticket holders.

How to Play Australia Powerball

Australia Powerball draws take place every Thursday at 7.30pm AEST (8.30pm AEDT), and the winning numbers are available to view on the Powerball Results page shortly after.

Players purchase their entries and select six numbers from 1 to 40 as well an additional number, known as the Powerball, from 1 to 20. To win the Division 1 prize, players must match all of the main numbers and the Powerball.

Many of the regional lottery operators offer players the chance to buy tickets which guarantee that they will match the Powerball, though these tickets may cost significantly more than a standard entry.

Powerball Prizes

Australia Powerball offers a minimum top prize worth AU$3 million along with seven other prize tiers. Here are the odds on winning on a single play in each of the eight divisions:

Division

Numbers Required

Odds (Single Game)
1st Match 6 + Powerball 1 in 76,767,600
2nd Match 6 1 in 4,040,400
3rd Match 5 + Powerball 1 in 376,312
4th Match 5 1 in 19,806
5th Match 4 + Powerball 1 in 9,123
6th Match 3 + Powerball 1 in 641
7th Match 4 1 in 480
8th Match 2 + Powerball 1 in 110
Approximate overall odds of winning a prize: 1 in 78

If no players can match all six main numbers and the Powerball, then the Division 1 prize fund “jackpots”, or rolls over, to the next draw. Multiple rollovers can generate huge prizes, although the Australian Powerball Division 1 prize can only roll over 25 times in total. If there is no Division 1 winner in the 26th consecutive rollover, then any money added to the prize total will be equally shared by players in the next winning division.
