Economic policy: Private banks report deposit withdrawals

The Damascus Securities Exchange (DSE) has published interim financial statements for the first half of 2011 issued by 11 of the 12 private banks listed on the fledgling bourse. The figures confirm anecdotal reports of a significant withdrawal of deposits as a result of the unrest, with the largest and best-established private banks worst hit. However, when compared with recently issued aggregate
