The closing ceremony for the 2012 Olympic Games in London is this Sunday, August 12th. There are many souvenirs and commemoratives for you to purchase, but the coin collector in me is delighted by the London 2012 50p sports collection. The 29 coin set features designs that were submitted by the public. The 29 different designs commemorate all 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports. According to the mint's website, "Over 30,000 entries were received from members of the public. As a result, this is perhaps the most vibrant, creative and passionate collection The Royal Mint has ever issued. The winning designs were chosen by The Royal Mint Advisory Committee and officially approved by Her Majesty The Queen." You can order a complete set or just a few of your favorite sports.

Last month a very special Lincoln Penny minted in 1992 sold for over $20,000 at a Heritage Auction Galleries sale. As common as 1992 pennies are, this was no ordinary penny to say the least. This specimen was the rare "Close AM" variety in uncirculated condition and was graded as MS-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service. Due to a mix-up at the mint back in 1992, a different die was used for the reverse of the coin before it was supposed to be used starting in 1993. A limited quantity of these coins escaped into circulation. Be sure to check your pocket change and see if you have this or any other Lincoln cent key dates, rarities and varieties in your possession....Read Full Post

A new free iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch app has been released by Coinflation.com (a division of Collectors Universe, Inc.). The app uses real-time metal prices to calculate the melt value of U.S. coins. This includes prices for all silver and base metal (copper, nickel, etc.) but not gold. The app is easy to use and the photos of the coins are spectacular. It also incorporates a calculator for scrap silver and gold that you may want to sell. Simple enter the total weight and fineness and the calculator will do the rest. The Coinflation.com app is the latest in a continuing series of free smart phone applications offered by Collectors Universe (www.Collectors.com) since January 2010 when PCGS Photograde Online became available on iPhones. Search for "Coinflation" in the App Store to read the reviews and get your copy....Read Full Post
