The annual A.N.A. World's Fair of Money is coming to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from August 7 to August 11, 2012 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in historic downtown Philadelphia. Show hours are 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7-10 and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Aug. 11. Admission is $6 for adults, and free for ANA members and children 12 and under. Many of the more than 1,000 coin and paper money dealers at the show will provide free, informal appraisals for visitors who bring in their old coins and paper money. Learning to grade coins is a skill (some say it's an "art") that takes many years of experience to develop. You will find many books on the subject and even more resources on the Internet. Some of them are good, some are not quite so good and some are great. A lot of this depends upon where you are in your journey to become a proficient coin grader. Back in 1973, the American Numismatic Association started the ball-rolling on standardizing the grading terms used in coin collecting. Designations such as MS-70 were not even in existence yet. Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas, Texas has announced that they are sponsoring an essay contest for young numismatists. Four winners will be selected every year and will receive a prize package worth more than $750! The essay contest is open to all students, ages 8-18. Essays should be 350-500 words, and all previously submitted entries will also be considered for each subsequent contest. According to the press release, Heritage's Robert Korver, who created the contest said, "For decades numismatists have been concerned about the lack of interest in rare coins shown by the young -- especially disturbing since so many professionals had our interest kindled before our teen years. Heritage has previously been active in supporting Young Numismatists in many different ways, including our summer intern programs -- and is now trying this new approach. I implore every experienced collector to make young collectors -- or even potential collectors -- aware of this contest."
