Beautiful view of Ivano-Frankovsk. UkraineIvano-Frankovsk is one of the few Ukrainian cities, where in almost unchangeable view remained the past, in the center of which is the 49,5 m height town hall with the gilded cupola and the Market square nearby. The town hall (1695) has the cruciform view, the underground served as the place of imprisonment. Now there is the museum. Not far from the town hall there is situated not large but marvelous park. Here is the pedestrian street, which ends with the small square with beautiful music fountain.
The cathedral with the graves of Pototski (1700) – is the second ancient building in the city after the town hall. Now it is the museum, where are situated the icon artworks, paints and baroque sculptures of the national region.
In the city there is the rare sample of the industrial architecture of Ukraine in the second half of the 18th century – the brewery, which is used according to its primarily purpose nowadays. The building of the brewery is the oldest in Ukraine among the similar enterprises.Town Hall of Ivano-Frankovsk. Ukraine
There take place the restoration works of the rests of the fortress wall and the building of the historical complex on the Novgorodskaia Street, which should reflect one of the defence bastions of the old Stanislavov (the former name of Ivano-Frankovsk). According to the historical data this is the only octagonal fortress in the world. Since recently there are the excavations of the underground paths and catacombs, they are considered to join 6 bastions of the old fortress.
The extraordinary event for the city with the European architecture was the appearance of the museum of Ukrainian graffiti in Ivano-Frankovsk.

The city of Chernovtsy (Chernivtsi, Chernivtsy, Chernovtsi) is the beautiful green city, administrative center, which saved the heritage of the former generations – the wonderful architecture. In the rating of the best cities for dwelling in Ukraine Chernovtsy in 2008 took the first place. Chernovtsy city is famed for its palaces, temples and dwelling houses. There are many architectural monuments of the European level here, erected in 12-13th centuries. Chernivtsi is called the symbiosis of the architectural monuments, which are nowadays the architectural adorning of Vienna, Prague and Paris.
The main attraction of the city is the National University of Chernovtsy (Chernovtsi). In past times it served as the residence for the metropolitans of Bukovina. It was projected by the Czech scientist and architect Iosef Glavka. The project took the prize-winning places many times on the contests of architects and was awarded on the World Exhibition in Paris.
On the Sagaidachnaia Stree there is situated the wooden St. Nikolai Church, built in 1607 and remained up to nowadays. This is the oldest construction on the territory of Chernivtsi (Ukraine). To other interesting buildings belong: The General’s House, the St. Paraskeia Church, and the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, the tower of which was used as the observation point to find the fire.
TheChernovtsy. National University. Ukraine unordinary building is situated on the crossroads of The Main Street and Sholom-Aleihema Street; this building received the name “The House-Ship”. The uniqueness of the building lies in its decoration – the fountain in form Lion’s head and cup-shell. The corner of the house seems to cut the asphalt of the street, just like the water smooth.
The heart of the city is the Central Square. There are many old but well remained buildings on the square. But the most interesting building is the town hall – the 50 m height double-decked tower with balconies, on the top of which there are only spire and a clock.
The Theatre Square is one of the most beautiful in Chernovtsy (Chernivtsy), where is situated the building of Dramatic Theatre. Its façade is adorned with the sculptural group associated with the Greek mythology and marble busts of the famous persons of the world culture. On the Theatre Square there is the “Alley of Stars”, which looks like the “Alley of Stars” in Hollywood. Cathedral in ChernovtsyOn this alley were solemnly opened many stars of Ukrainian and world culture. There was opened the star for Ani Lorak – People’s Artist of Ukraine, who won the second place on “Eurovision-2008”. In Chernovtsy city there are about 20 monuments. Among them are the monuments to Taras Shevchenko, to the Austrian poet Paul Anzel and to Romanian writer Mihayu Eminesku. On the O. Kobylianska Street near the Palace of the solemn events was set the extraordinary monument – the forged carriage. It was made during the year by five smiths and presented to Chernovtsy Ukraine. To create the carriage, they found the archive documents and duplicated the shape of the ancient carriage, which became the favourite place for the citizens to make photos.

Kodak Fortress near Dnepropetrovsk

2012-03-25 03:46:00 (читать в оригинале)

Kodak fortress is a Polish fortress and is located on the right bank of the Dnieper River in one an a half kilometer from Dnepropetrovsk  in the village of “Stari Kodaky”. The name of the fortress in Turkic language means "settlement on the hill".

Kodak fortress was built in July 1635. The construction works were led by the French engineer de Boplan. The purpose of the fortress was to block access to the Black Sea and the obstruction of villagers to flee in Zaporozhye. The contemporaries gave the fortress the unofficial name “the key to Zaporozhye”.

The garrison of the fortress consisted of 200 German mercenaries, dragoons, commanded by that officer Jean Marion. In August 1635 under the command of Ataman Sulima, the Cossacks attacked Kodak fortress and destroyed it, having executed the commander and killed all the dragoons except for 15 mercenaries, who were in reconnaissance at that moment.

On the territory of the fortress there were built Catholic Church, monastery and the Orthodox Church; the number of the garrison increased to 600 people. The firepower of Kodak fortress was reinforced by artillery and guard tower.

In September 1648 there were sent at once three Cossack regiments under the command of J. Vovchenko, M. Nesterenko, and P. Shumeyko to capture the fortress. October 1 the Kodak fortress surrendered without a fight, the fortress guns were dismantled and the very fortress has lost its purpose until 1654.

In times of Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the Kodak fortress was the outpost against the Cossacks of Zaporizhian Sich. In 1711 it was destroyed, and from 1734 to 1775 it had been a Cossacksettlement. In 1910 at the site of the former fortress there was established a memorial, and in 1940 there was created a granite quarry on the territory of Kodak, which destroyed almost the entire fortress. There have survived only a few ruins of Kodak and earth billows in the north.

Church of St. Nicholas in Dnepropetrovsk

2012-03-25 03:43:00 (читать в оригинале)

St. Nicholas Church appeared due to the existence of the Dnepropetrovsk  plant, where 90% of employers were Poles, who were in the Roman Catholic community. The former director of the plant, Ignatius Yasyukovich, decided to build a church. However, taking into account the possible negative reaction of the Orthodox population on the construction of Catholic Church, he decided first to build an Orthodox church, and then the catholic one.
St. Nicholas Church
In 1895 there started the construction of the church, the architect of which was Marian Hormansky, who created the draft of neo-Gothic church. On the eastern facade the building is decorated with two towers, rising up to 33 meters. The main facade is decorated with wooden carvings and art smithery, and the arched window over the central Gothic doors, is larger than the main entrance to the church. The downspouts are in the form of gargoyles, and the bird's-eye view of the very building resembles the shape of the Latin cross lying on the ground.

Church of St. Nicholas is built of yellow brick, and includes the 500 parishioners. The building of the temple has lasted for more than two years, and upon the completion of construction there was nailed the plate on the wall of the church, reporting that the Parish Church of St. Nicholas was built in the years 1895-1897 on the initiative of Ignatius Yasyukovich on the donations of employees and workers of the plant, as well as thanks to Metallurgical Community.

The church had experienced a lot of restoration work and many difficult years over its history. So, in 1902 the temple walls have been re-painted and decorated; the wooden fence was replaced with forged gothic Church of St. Nicholaslattice, and over the main entrance there emerged the statue of the Virgin Mary. In 1929, the government took the Catholic Church and opened the Polish club in the building. At the beginning of XX century, the Catholic community began to carry out works to save the temple. Thanks to their efforts, the church was restored. And since 1991 the divine services have been carried out every day.
