Primers
2012-05-11 09:43:00 (читать в оригинале)Primer is one of the basic and most important things for each modeler. It can either make you king or cause the frustration, ruining the whole time & efforts. My own experience started with the last part :)
I bought it during my vacation in Thailand, considering the brand is trustworthy and should go well with Mr.Color paints. The logic is here and the product is good indeed. But I probably took the retarded bottle which caused all my paint job peeled off, together with the masking tape. That was a sad day... I had to wash everything out and then start over. Still have this "unlucky" bottle in my supply stock, but never want to use it again :-)
My second try was about Tamiya fine surfacer (L).
The big can looked very promising and it did the job! The whole GK set was primed within 20-25 minutes, with a smooth surface and strong adherence. It has the strongest one, I should say. It takes some time to verify the right distance between the can spray and GK detail, and sometime you may get "grains", but in the end it's quite easy to use. The only disappointing thing is the price (about 10-12 USD/can) and it's volume (180ml) against the consumption, but the last one can be reduced if you pour the can off and use the primer in your airbrush. Be careful and read the respective manuals before that! By the way, you do not have to thin it for the airbrush.
The third one - Motip primer (white) was not good either.
I read about the colleague's nice experience and decided to save some money. So, I went to the nearest shop selling the car cosmetic and bought the huuuge (+25% free) can for 6 USD only. It looked fine and it seemed to work fine, but it caused my favorite Mr.Color and Gaia paint peeled off. Not again... huh? From the other side it had no troubles with Folkart acrylic, so I can not say it's 100% bad. Still no. I returned to the pricey Tamiya.
My fourth and favorite is Gaianotes EVO.
I love the stuff, cause it has a variety of colors and you can pick up the one, close to the next paint layer. Gives you very thin layer, the smooth surface and does not hide any small details. It should be thinned approx 1(primer):2(thinner) with Gaia T-07. The adherence is average, but it should be fine unless you furiously scratch and rub the model. However, EVO is quite hard to find - you can buy it in some internet shops. Costs are about 7-8 USD per bottle (without shipping).

Paints

The first thing you need to have - is a good breathing mask. The ones by 3M are quite nice. Please remember to protect yourself, even in case of the water based paint usage, as you still inhale it's very small particles. Not to mention that the mask is "must have" for any solvent based paints.
I also recommend you to buy the latex gloves to protect your hands. Solvents may damage the sensitive skin, and of course you don't want to scare people around with a green "hulk hands" :)
Now, talking about paint, you need to try some different brands/bases and find "yours". There is no good or bad options, I know the people addicted to the acrylic paints only. Or using the solvent ones. Just try it and you'll finally stick to the certain stuff. Also your choice depends on the preferred primer, as some paints don't go well together, and from your airbrush nozzle (I use 0.2 with the solvent based and 0.3-0.5 with acrylics). Here is the short review, based on my personal experience :
1. Mr.Color and Mr.Hobby by Gunze Sangyo.
The common mistake is to mix it up with Mr.Hobby by the same brand. Those two are absolutely different: Mr.Color is the acrylic solvent based, fast drying and durable paint while Mr.Hobby is the water based paint and it takes a while to dry. The smell of Mr.Color is very strong, so use it in the well ventilated areas only. Mr.Hobby has almost no smell at all. The costs are about $2.5-$3 per bottle.
Enamel is suitable for the airbrush and normal brush (for small details). Takes longer to dry, but makes nice and durable surface. The smell is sensible, so better use it in a well-ventilated areas.

Gunze makes a lot of pre-mixed colors, suitable to painting the anime characters. They also have special sets for painting girls and gun dams.
Mr.Color goes well together with Gunze primers, Tamiya fine surfacer (the one in cans) and Gaianotes EVO.
Thinners to use with : Mr.Thinner / Mr. Leveling thinner (slows down the drying) for Mr.Color
Mr. Aqueous (Hobby color) thinner for Mr.Hobby
2. Tamiya enamel and acrylic paint.
Enamel is suitable for the airbrush and normal brush (for small details). Takes longer to dry, but makes nice and durable surface. The smell is sensible, so better use it in a well-ventilated areas.
Acrylic paint is nice as well, but mostly fits for the airbrush. Has no smell. I do not really like it, due to the weaker adhesive properties and "dull" colors. The average costs are about $2.5/bottle
Tamiya paints can be used after Tamiya fine surfacer primer (the one in cans).
Thinners to use with : Tamiya color X-20 for enamel
Tamiya color X-20A, Mr.Muscul for acrylic
3. Vallejo model color, Game color and Model Air acrylic paints.
The paint is good, has nice pigments and does not clog the airbrush nozzle. But still, it's not my best friend... Model Color bottles have a different thickness, and the paint does not stick well to my favorite primers. I mostly use it with a normal brush, to make tiny touches, face details or line corrections.
Model Color is suitable for any figures, Game Color is made especially for the fantasy series, Model Air is made for the direct airbrush usage. Has no smell. Costs are about $3-3.5/bottle.
Can be used with Vallejo primer. Does not stick well to Tamyia and Gaia primers.
Thinners to use with : Vallejo Model paint thinner, water, some use Vodka (Model Color, Game color)
No thinning for Model Air
4. Folkart acrylic craft paints
The cheapest one, about $2/60 ml bottle. Has a variety of pre-mixed colors (a little bit dull, but Folkart metallics are nice ones), should be thinned to the consistency of milk for use in the airbrush. Has no smell. Takes about 24 hours to dry completely, so be careful with masking and sealing.
Folkart also makes the paints for ceramic and textiles, but you need just a normal craft paint (refer to the photo).
Can be used after Tamyia fine surfacer primer (the one in cans) or Gaianotes EVO.
Thinners to use with : water, Mr.Muscul

Hongkong - Cafes and Restaurants

Come on, you just need to find the right places! Hongkong is full of the small cafes, ramen shops, sushi bars and dim sum restaurants, quite affordable. Most of the are run by the chinese family business, except of "Cafe de Coral". The last one is our first stop.
1. Cafe de Coral
Address : many, it's everywhere in Hongkong. Please refer to the website to find the closest to your area

Visual : look for the yellow sign with the red logo on it.
What to eat : good breakfast sets (the chicken with maple sauce is gorgeous), dinners (steaks, hotpot, BBQ, roasted meat etc.). Lunch is so-so...
Service : self. Pick up the "wall-menu", remember the code then say it at the cashier. Get the table and wait until you see the code running on the panel. Go to pickup your food at the counter.
Average bill : 25-50 HKD (4-7 USD) per person
2. Itamae Sushi.
Address : many in Hongkong, you may try one of these
- 22-26, Wai Tsuen Road, Hong Kong, China
- Shop Nos 1-3, 24-26 East Point Road, Causeway Bay
- Shop 1-8,1/F,Jialefang, No.56 Dengdashi Street
Visual : look for the brown sign with red hieroglyphs
What to eat: best fresh and tasty sushi, sashimi, miso etc.
Service : menu or conveyer. Coming closer to 23-24h you may have to run into the electronic que, as this place is quite popular among locals.
Average bill: 100-150 HKD (15-20 USD) per person
3. Urawa Japanese Restaurant
Address: they have three currently
- Basement & G/F, Tung Hip Commercial building, 244-252 Des Voeux Road Central, Sheung Wan
- Shop A No.4 Landale Street, Wanchai, Hongkong
- 3/F, Lik Sang Plaza, Tsuen Wan, N.T.
Visual :look for the brown sign with red hieroglyphs
What to eat : sushi, sashimi, rolls, soups, oysters etc.
Service: menu or buffet (the last one is awesome)
Average bill: ~200 HKD (30 USD) per person (you will be really full, believe me)
4. Good start cafe
Address : Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok, 110 Ground Floor. They may be more, but I do not know the exact locations.
Visual : look for the red sign with white hieroglyphs
What to eat : dim sums, many and tasty. Also the traditional chinese soup and some side dishes.
Service : menu
Average bill : 40-50 HKD (6-7 USD) per person
5. Fuk Yuen Hotpot Seafood Restaurant
Address : 2/F,Yau Shing Commercial Centre, 51 Sai Yeung Choi Street, Mongkok
Visual : quite hard to notice. Just follow Sai Yeung Street until you see "Cafe de Coral" sign. The Fuk Yuen is in the same building.
What to eat: lot'sof traditional chinese food (roasted duck, goose, black chicken soup) and excellent seafood.
Service : menu
Average bill : 150-250 per person (depends on what you take, cause they have good lobsters)
6. Ajisen Ramen
Address : many in Hongkong, please refer to the website to find the nearest to your area http://www.ajisen.com.hk/web/restaurant02.html
Visual : look for the cute little girl with ramen bowl sign :)
What to eat : salads, ramen and set meals
Service : menu
Average bill : 50-60 HKD (7-9 USD) per person
I could continue writing about all these cosy places, like Yoshinoya, Lau shan, and so on. But I recommend you to go and try instead. Find the new spots and share them!
