Sales of United States proof sets peaked in the 1980's and early 1990's, while mint sets reached their high point in the mid-1960's and late 1970's. Many millions of these proof sets and mint sets were sold by the U.S. Mint directly to customers. Are you better off to wait until the market settles down and then by your proof and mint sets from a coin dealer? Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) (www.ngccoin.com) has released a new app for smart phones that you can use to verify NGC certified coins. Coin Details is a free and easy to use app that works with iPhone®, iPod® or Android devices. The app requires a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet or access to your phones data network. You can enter the certification number manually or scan it in with your phone's camera. I tried to scan several barcodes from different coins under different lighting conditions and I could not get any of them to work. Other than that, the app gives you a great deal of data about the coin. Information includes:

As I previously reported back in April, the unique 1873-CC No Arrows Dime was going to be the center of attention at the ANA convention in August in Philadelphia. This coin did not disappoint the people that came to bid on it. According to Chris Napolitano, president of Stack's Bowers Galleries, the coin was purchased by a person who wishes to remain anonymous, for $1.6 million. Add on another 15% "buyer fee" and the total cost of the coin rises to $1.84 million! Online bidding before the live auction began drove the price up to nearly $1 million. The price was driven even higher as bidders on the auction floor and on the telephone quickly pushed the coin to its new record of $1.84 million.
