Old Wounds: "New Fortunes"
2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)Oh, they're pissed. That's the ultimate takeaway from "e;New Fortunes,"e; an ironically named burst from New Jersey crossover aggressors Old Wounds that's actually about being so heartbroken you set the world on fire. The trio emerges irate here, lashing ahead at a furious hardcore clip alongside screams about tears and disappointment, selfishness and heartlessness. The curveball comes about a minute in, when the band quotes Elvis' "e;Love Me Tender"e;, drops the tempo and blankets the breakdown with shrieks of feedback. Kevin Iavaroni's enormous bass part sounds like self-flagellation, fists of disappointment pounded against the body. "e;New Fortunes"e; pairs the maudlin pages of high school diaries with a grown-ass band's concision and power. Old Wounds, then, bruise with teenage teardrops.

Lust for Youth: "Chasing the Light"
2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)Hannes Norrvide, the Swedish producer who records as Lust for Youth, is caught between two poles. He’s got a burning affinity for the kind of scrappy production values typical of cold wave pioneers like Trop Tard, whom Norrvide’s label, Sacred Bones, released a retrospective of in 2012. But there’s a clear pop sensibility to new single "e;Chasing the Light"e; that makes his work less opaque, suggesting that he shares at least a modicum of common ground with synth oriented populists like Yaz and Soft Cell.
The sleaze-addled approach of Marc Almond’s former band seems particularly pertinent here, with Norrvide’s production values firmly in the gutter, making it feel like the whole track is dusted in a thick layer of gunk. When he repeats the central vocal refrain--"e;You and I, chasing the light"e;-- in a forlorn, barely awake drawl, it adds a sprinkling of doomed romanticism that sits perfectly with the musical plunge to the bottom. Still, there are chunks of light here that suggest this could connect beyond disciples of the soon-to-end Wierd club nights that have been a fixture of the New York party scene over the last decade.

Leech: "Tusks"
2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)Los Angeles denizen Brian Foote is involved in so many musical endeavors it's hard to keep track of them all. There's his membership in the long-running ensembles Nudge and Fontanelle; his running of labels Audraglint, Peak Oil, and Ecstasy; and his day job at the veteran imprint Kranky. But one pursuit is solely his: the electronic, beat-oriented solo project he calls Leech. It's a name he's used for eight years for DJ gigs and compilation appearances, but the forthcoming Tusks 12"e; on 100% Silk is his first official release.
"e;Tusks” opens the four-song EP with a somewhat minimalist groove, as Foote's pointed beat cuts through synth lines and voice samples. Then, as the track gathers momentum, it becomes increasingly dense, with a swarm of sounds circling the beat and reflecting around the stereo space. Yet even when the pulse quickens and the atmosphere thickens, there's still lots of space and air between Foote's precise moves. So as complex as "e;Tusks” gets, it's grounded in rhythmic simplicity, and Foote never lets your ears lose track of Leech's razor-sharp beat.

Elephant: "Skyscraper"
2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)At first glance, the A-side of Elephant's upcoming Memphis Industries single isn't much more than a pleasant slice of dream pop, proudly wearing the influence of groups like Beach House on its sleeves. But while the spindly guitar line, brief organ splashes, and smoky female lead vocal are all familiar genre touchstones, "e;Skyscraper"e; contains its share of distinctive elements. A melodic, catchy bass line and steady beat serve as rhythmic anchors, grounding the song where others might swirl aimlessly, and the chorus is complemented nicely by bursts of choral backing vocals. In striking a balance between airy, light pop and an assertive, earthy low end, Elephant properly honor the song's title: after all, skyscrapers couldn't exist without solid foundations.

Mikal Cronin: "Shout It Out"
2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)At a time of year when many of us would trade our mothers for a temperature above freezing, Mikal Cronin's "e;Shout It Out"e; is an instant blast of summer, like drinking an ice cold beer at a bonfire or tossing a frisbee around in the sunlight. The first track released from his upcoming album MCII opens with an clean, easy-going guitar melody that could stand proudly with the sticky-sweet leads of Real Estate or Beach Fossils. But Cronin understands the value of a little dirt, as he happily kicks down the door to the chorus with a massive distorted riff and an all-out percussive assault. The marriage of appealing melody and sheer force proves totally irresistible. Cronin asks, "e;Do I shout it out? Do I let it go?"e;, and when I hear this song, I find myself unable to resist doing either.
