Cankun: "Science Can Help You"

2013-02-09 20:19:00 (читать в оригинале)

As Cankun, France's Vincent Caylet makes a hazy blend of psych rock, dub loops, and even disco beats. The forthcoming Culture of Pink, his second album for Hands in the Dark, mines this mix to perfection. It's soaked in a tropical vibe, evoking the slow-building cycles of Sun Araw. But Caylet's sound is more hectic, prone to quick-cutting between styles rather than morphing them together. That's the case on "e;Science Can Help You,"e; where the first two minutes are all loping beat and glistening guitar.

But halfway through, a swamp of dissonance shifts the song into a bassy rain dance. Though Caylet adds layers of reverb and sparkle, his bass line persists like a beam of light shining through a foggy forest. "e;Science Can Help You"e; might at first seem like two songs psted together, but listen repeatedly and the halves sound like negative images of each other. That's part of the magic of Cankun's sound-- Caylet gives it so much depth and density that every listen is different.

James Blake: "Retrograde"

2013-02-09 20:18:00 (читать в оригинале)

Up to this point, James Blake has gone to great lengths to prove he's a fighter, not a lover. Or, at least, someone who can see battle lines in any artistic pursuit-- in between "e;CMYK"e; playing chicken with sample clearance lawsuits and his fears over the purity of dubstep, there was 2011's James Blake, an album where he wrote songs (well, some of them) and sang them while appearing extremely uncomfortable with the connotations of "e;singer-songwriter"e;. They were pretty, but goddamn, were they serious.

Maybe he's mellowed with age: "e;Retrograde"e;, the first single from the forthcoming Overgrown, is a straight-up soul crooner where his characteristic production details are still in place, but they're in the service of arrangement rather than disorientation. Those wordless falsetto curlicues recall none other than D'Angelo's "e;Brown Sugar"e;, as the snap of the snare suggests that this is the sort of steady pop you typically get from ?uestlove. Even though the same buzz-synths from "e;Unluck"e; and "e;I Never Learnt To Share"e; reappear, their jutting points are shorn off. And his big vocal trick isn't some kind of electronic manipulation, but rather an heretofore unheard lower register where he intones, "e;We're alone now."e; Hell, it may just be a love song and another subtle attack to anyone who thought he was simply an interpretor rather than a songwriter capable of giving the public his own "e;Limit To Your Love."e; "e;Retrograde"e; sweetly says, "e;Yeah, I can do that too."e;

Boldy James: "Come Here" [ft. Peechie Green]

2013-02-09 20:18:00 (читать в оригинале)

Don't let Boldy James' recent embrace of that Future-tinged autotune distract you. He's still selling detail-heavy street tales with the same savvy as always. On "e;Come Here"e;, a should-be standard ode to the good life, James imparts a surprising amount of specificity for a radio-friendly song. Bragging about a surplus of product is nothing new, but requiring a second house for storage and processing is an outlandish, head-turning claim. The beat here isn't quite as novel but it's a capable Mike Will Made It soundalike, bombastic and melodic. Collaborator Peechie Green makes the most of it, combining T.I.'s rounded Atlanta accent with a bit of Rozay gruffness, a distillation of two of rap's most reliable hitmakers which helps bring energy to a cut that's clearly meant to spark some excitement.

Mogwai: "Wizard Motor"

2013-02-09 20:18:00 (читать в оригинале)

The decision to use Mogwai’s music as the soundtrack to a moody, touching ghost story isn't a difficult one to make. "e;Wizard Motor"e; is an evocative piece, flooded with loss and pain. It’s taken from the band’s score for "e;Les Revenants"e;, a French TV series set in a remote mountain town where children who were killed in a bus crash mysteriously return to life. Mogwai's best work either carries a strong emotional heft or straight out nihilistic thrills, and they're in the former mode here, mapping out a great plain of hurt chiseled from ultra-compressed guitar lines, stepping back from the distorted fury their tracks often build into.

Still, "e;Wizard Motor"e; bears a familiar cadence, starting quietly and subtly climbing to a more substantial space. That space is vast, but when Mogwai do "e;big"e;, they’re able to drag a truckload of sentiment along with them, retaining an element of humility that could easily get lost in such cavernous surroundings. It’s difficult to imagine how this fits with the show for which it was composed, mainly because it feels like an entity all to itself. But, like the best soundtrack work, "e;Wizard Motor"e; has a dual purpose, forging connections within the world it was created for and gathering a weight of its own when detached from that creation.

Call of the Void: "Napalm Lungs"

2013-02-09 20:18:00 (читать в оригинале)

Call of the Void, who used to be called Ironhorse before some trademark issues, blend crust punk, hardcore, and grind into cathartic, anthemic bursts. (It makes sense they were set to tour with Gaza and that their label mentions Converge.) To get an idea of the Boulder, Co., quartet's approach, take a listen to "e;Napalm Lungs"e;,  from their debut album Dragged Down A Dead End Path, out March 19 on Relapse.
