Thrombolytic tissue plasminogen activator demonstrated the possibility of being a useful adjunctive treatment for patients with calciphylaxis, according to recent study results.Researchers at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., conducted a retrospective chart review of 15 patients with calciphylaxis (median age at diagnosis, 59 years; 11 women) who were treated between 2002 and 2010. The usually fatal thrombotic condition, affecting up to 4% of long-term dialysis patients, results in ischemia, necrosis and infarction of adipose and cutaneous tissue.

On Feb. 5, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reduced its estimate of the cost to freeze Medicare payments under the physician fee schedule (PFS) at current levels by more than $100 billion. Medicare spending under the PFS is driven in large part by the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula. Under the current formula, the CBO projects that Medicare payments to physicians will be reduced by about 25% percent in January 2014 before increasing by small amounts in subsequent years.

Melanoma recurred in 16% of patients after negative SLNB

Sixteen percent of patients experienced melanoma recurrence after a negative sentinel lymph node biopsy that included a false-negative rate of 4%, according to study results.In a retrospective chart review of prospectively collected data, researchers in Colorado studied 515 patients (mean age, 49.7 years; 56.5% men) with cutaneous melanoma who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) without evidence of metastatic disease between 1996 and 2008. Time to recurrence and overall survival were main outcome measures

Education and training in cosmetic procedures for dermatology residents varied, according to recent survey results.Researchers emailed a 26-question survey in May 2010 to dermatology program directors through the Association of Professors of Dermatology list-serve. The emails then were forwarded to cosmetic and procedural dermatology instructors and chief residents.

Dermatologists reported varied perceptions on safety, effectiveness of psoriasis therapy

Dermatologists who treat patients with moderate to severe psoriasis reported wide variations in their perceptions of the efficacy and particularly the safety of systemic therapies in a recent study.Researchers conducted a cross-sectional mail survey of 387 dermatologists with expertise on psoriasis who completed four-page questionnaires between May 2010 and August 2010. The cohort included randomly selected members of the National Psoriasis Foundation (n=246) and American Academy of Dermatology (n=141). Average length of practice was 23.1 years and 72% of respondents were men. Ten systemic therapies were assessed.
