Stricter smoking regulations resulted in fewer asthma hospitalizations

The introduction of laws that banned smoking in enclosed public places in England led to a 12.3% decrease in asthma attacks there, according to study findings published online.Christopher Millett, MD, of the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, and colleagues looked at data on a set of children aged 14 years and younger who were seen at an ED for asthma from April 2002 to November 2010.

New CT scanner yielded better images with less radiation

A next-generation CT scanner produced higher-quality images, with as much as 95% less radiation exposure, compared with currently used machines, according to results of a study.Marcus Y. Chen, MD, a clinician in the NHLBI’s Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory, and colleagues analyzed data from 107 patients (mean age, 55.4 years; 53.3% men) who underwent coronary CT angiography with a new second-generation CT scanner. They then compared radiation exposure and image quality with 100 patients who underwent CT imaging with the previous first-generation scanner.

Many children with food allergies bullied

About half of the children participating in a recent survey who had been previously diagnosed with food allergies also reported being bullied.Eyal Shemesh, MD, chief of the division of behavioral and developmental health in the department of pediatrics and Kravis Children’s Hospital, and colleagues surveyed 251 pairs of parents and children who were consecutively recruited during routine allergy clinic visits. Bullying related to food allergy or for any cause, quality of life, and distress in both the child and parent were evaluated using validated questionnaires.

Children commonly experienced inflammatory reaction to molluscum contagiosum, including symptoms resembling Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, according to study results.In a retrospective review of medical charts at a pediatric dermatology practice in New York, researchers studied 696 patients (mean age, 5.5 years; 51.7% girls) with molluscum contagiosum (MC). In patients with and without atopic dermatitis (AD), frequencies, characteristics and associated features of inflammatory reactions to MC were used as main outcome measures

Digital health records not upholding promises on lower costs, better care

Electronic health records have not brought the expected reductions in costs or improvements in health care, according to a RAND Corp. analysis.The report concludes that current systems were slow to be adopted and “neither interconnected nor easy to use.”A 2005 analysis by RAND researchers predicted that a broad adoption of health care information technology could eventually save $81 billion annually in US health care costs.The latest report cites the need for health care providers to “re-engineer” processes based on a “compelling vision” that could still meet the original promise of improved care at lower cost.
