Atopic dermatitis associated with food allergy in early childhood accelerated the progression of allergic march, according to study results.Researchers in Japan mailed questionnaires to 3,321 first-year university students (mean age, 18.4 years; 66.5% men) about allergic diseases. Questionnaires included personal and family histories of doctor-diagnosed allergic diseases, clinical courses and aggravating factors.

MI risk higher in unmarried men, women

Unmarried men and women face an increased risk for fatal and nonfatal MI, no matter their age, according to recent study findings published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. The study was based on FINAMI MI register data from 1993 to 2002. Researchers analyzed information on adults aged at least 35 years living in four geographical regions of Finland.

Mortality, readmission rates not associated for MI or pneumonia

Among patients hospitalized for acute myocardial infarction or pneumonia, the mortality rates and readmission rates were not linked, according to recent data published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.“Our hypothesis was that these measures would not be strongly related because the factors that influence the risk of mortality are different from those that influence the risk of adverse events and readmission after discharge,” Harlan Krumholz, MD, Harold H. Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, told Infectious Disease News. “The study should reassure hospitals and clinicians that doing well on mortality rates will not impose a disadvantage for readmission rates. We failed to find evidence that hospitals cannot excel on both.”

Sublingual immunotherapy shows promise for peanut allergy

A majority of individuals with peanut allergy achieved low-level desensitization after sublingual immunotherapy, according to recent data.The multicenter trial included 40 patients, aged 12 to 37 years, randomly assigned to receive daily peanut or placebo sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). All patients received baseline oral food challenge of up to 2 g of peanut powder to assess tolerance before onset of symptoms.

ACS-induced PTSD linked to crowding in EDs

Increased crowding in EDs may be associated with higher levels of ACS-induced post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, according to a research letter published in JAMA Internal Medicine.Researchers recorded time of presentation to the ED at a large teaching hospital in New York City for 135 participants (mean age, 63 years; 72% men; 23% black; 47% Hispanic) with ACS in the observational Prescription Use, Lifestyle, Stress Evaluation (PULSE) study between 2009 and 2011. They estimated degree of ED crowding exposure by calculating the number of ED admissions 12 hours before and 12 hours after each participant’s presentation time. Crowding was divided into tertiles for analysis.
