High bone mass linked to greater fat mass in women

The literature suggests that BMI is elevated among patients with high bone mass. In a recent analysis, researchers from the United Kingdom investigated this association and found that high bone mass is related to higher fat mass, reflecting a causal pathway. “We found that in high bone mass, women fat mass is elevated, with a particular tendency toward central adiposity. High bone mass cases are thought to have a genetic predisposition to their raised bone mass density, suggesting a causal pathway whereby raised bone mass density leads to increased fat mass. Several observations support a primary bone phenotype with secondary fat effects,” the researchers wrote.

Angina not associated with CV events, death in diabetic patients

A post-hoc analysis of the BARI 2D trial found that patients with type 2 diabetes, stable CAD and documented myocardial ischemia were at similar risk for CV events and death regardless of whether they had angina, angina equivalents or were asymptomatic.The analysis included 2,364 patients with type 2 diabetes and documented CAD enrolled in the BARI 2D trial. The cohort had 1,434 patients with angina, 506 with angina equivalents and 424 with neither. All patients had suitable coronary anatomy for randomization into either PCI or CABG strata.

Shortened hormone therapy did not reduce survival of patients with high-risk prostate cancer

Patients with high-risk prostate cancer who received 18 months of hormone therapy lived as long as patients who underwent 36 months of therapy, according to results of a phase 3 study presented at the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium.Standard treatment for men diagnosed with high-risk prostate cancer consists of radiotherapy plus hormone therapy, also called androgen blockade therapy, for 24 to 36 months. Many side effects associated with androgen blockade therapy worsen over the course of treatment.

Medicaid drug selection committees often mismanage COI policies, researchers say

The current policies to manage conflicts of interest among Medicaid drug selection committees are inconsistent, mismanaged and often are not transparent, according to a report published in JAMA.“Pharmaceutical companies promote their products by offering gifts, consultation fees, and honoraria to individual practitioners and researchers,” the researchers wrote. “These practices can have an impact on the therapeutic decision making because they skew the body of scientific evidence in favor of newer, more expensive, on-patent drugs.”

Antibiotics improved efficacy of therapeutic regimen for severe malnutrition in children

Children with severe acute malnutrition who received antibiotics in addition to ready-to-use therapeutic food had better recovery and mortality rates than children given food alone in a recent study.In a double blind trial, researchers randomly assigned 2,767 severely malnourished Malawian children aged 6 to 59 months to receive either amoxicillin (n=924), cefdinir (n=923) or placebo (n=920) for 7 days, along with ready-to-use therapeutic food.
