Dermatologists reported varied perceptions on safety, effectiveness of psoriasis therapy

Dermatologists who treat patients with moderate to severe psoriasis reported wide variations in their perceptions of the efficacy and particularly the safety of systemic therapies in a recent study.Researchers conducted a cross-sectional mail survey of 387 dermatologists with expertise on psoriasis who completed four-page questionnaires between May 2010 and August 2010. The cohort included randomly selected members of the National Psoriasis Foundation (n=246) and American Academy of Dermatology (n=141). Average length of practice was 23.1 years and 72% of respondents were men. Ten systemic therapies were assessed.

91% of Hispanics reported lack of regular skin examinations

Most Hispanic patients reported not knowing the risk factors for skin cancer and not receiving a regular skin examination or performing an annual skin self-examination, according to study results.Researchers in North Carolina recruited and surveyed 301 patients of Hispanic descent (mean age, 35 years; 72% women). The majority of participants reported Mexico as their country of origin, with nine other countries also cited.

Medicaid drug selection committees often mismanage COI policies, researchers say

The current policies to manage conflicts of interest among Medicaid drug selection committees are inconsistent, mismanaged and often are not transparent, according to a report published in JAMA.“Pharmaceutical companies promote their products by offering gifts, consultation fees, and honoraria to individual practitioners and researchers,” the researchers wrote. “These practices can have an impact on the therapeutic decision making because they skew the body of scientific evidence in favor of newer, more expensive, on-patent drugs.”

‘Spring, summer eruption of elbows’ indicated polymorphous light eruption, not lupus erythematosus

Seasonal, recurrent eruption of patients’ elbows represented a localized version of polymorphous light eruption and not cutaneous lupus erythematosus, according to study results.Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of nine patients in Spain (mean age, 44.7 years; five men) who presented with recurrent spring eruption of their elbows from April 1989 to June 2012. Lesions consisted of pruriginous, erythematous-edematous papules and plaques. Eruption occurred in spring and early summer and recurred seasonally (ranging annually from 2 and 6 years) after the first week of sunlight exposure. Within 1 to 2 weeks, eruption resolved spontaneously or with topical corticosteroids; no associated symptoms were present..

Granulocyte and monocyte apheresis therapy was effective and safe for patients with generalized pustular psoriasis, according to recent study results.Researchers in Japan studied 15 patients (average age, 50.3 years; 11 men) who experienced persistent moderate to severe generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) despite receiving conventional medications. Pustules affected more than 10% of the patients’ skin.
