Weekend cyclosporine A therapy comparable to daily treatment for psoriasis

A 2-day weekend regimen and a continuous regimen of cyclosporine A for 20 weeks showed comparable results as treatment for plaque psoriasis, according to data from a recent study.In a 32-week, prospective observational cohort study, researchers in Portugal evaluated 21 patients (mean age, 44.3 years; 52.4% men) with plaque psoriasis (mean Psoriasis Area and Severity Index [PASI] score of 15.0). Nine patients had associated comorbidities. Monitoring occurred at weeks 6, 12, 22 and 32 while patients received cyclosporine A (CsA) therapy.

Melanoma recurred in 16% of patients after negative SLNB

Sixteen percent of patients experienced melanoma recurrence after a negative sentinel lymph node biopsy that included a false-negative rate of 4%, according to study results.In a retrospective chart review of prospectively collected data, researchers in Colorado studied 515 patients (mean age, 49.7 years; 56.5% men) with cutaneous melanoma who underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) without evidence of metastatic disease between 1996 and 2008. Time to recurrence and overall survival were main outcome measures

Higher nonmelanoma skin cancer rate found in HIV-positive patients

Patients who are HIV-positive had a twofold higher incidence rate of nonmelanoma skin cancers compared with patients who were HIV-negative, according to study results.Squamous cell carcinomas were associated with immunodeficiency, but basal cell carcinomas were not.

On Feb. 5, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) reduced its estimate of the cost to freeze Medicare payments under the physician fee schedule (PFS) at current levels by more than $100 billion. Medicare spending under the PFS is driven in large part by the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula. Under the current formula, the CBO projects that Medicare payments to physicians will be reduced by about 25% percent in January 2014 before increasing by small amounts in subsequent years.

On Feb. 1, 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its long-awaited final rule regarding the implementation of the physician payment sunshine provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The final rule does not create any new prohibitions on payments to physicians and teaching hospitals, but rather sets out new dates and requirements for manufacturers and other entities to collect data about their payments to physicians and other “covered recipients” and submit that information to CMS. Applicable manufacturers and group purchasing organizations (GPOs) must begin to collect this data on Aug. 1, 2013 and report the data to CMS by March 31, 2014.
