IL28B genotype had limited effect on telaprevir response in HCV patients

Patients with interleukin 28BCC genotype had a slightly better response to hepatitis C treatment with pegylated interferon, ribavirin and telaprevir than those with the CT or TT genotypes in a recent study.Researchers performed genetic testing on 527 patients with hepatitis C genotype 1 to detect polymorphisms of the IL28B gene. All participants had been enrolled in the REALIZE study, in which patients randomly were assigned either placebo (n=105) or 750 mg telaprevir every 8 hours for 12 weeks (n=422), in addition to 180 mcg weekly of pegylated interferon alfa-2a and between 1,000 mg and 1,200 mg ribavirin daily for 48 weeks.

Poor screening for hepatocellular carcinoma occurs frequently among patients with chronic HCV and advanced fibrosis and can lead to tumor diagnosis at a late stage, according to recent results.Researchers evaluated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance data from 1,005 patients with chronic hepatitis C with cirrhosis or advanced fibrosis. All participants had been enrolled in the Hepatitis C Antiviral Long-Term Treatment against Cirrhosis Trial. Incidence of consistent surveillance (CS) — defined as ultrasound and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) assessment performed at least once every 12 months — was recorded, along with surveillance failures (an absence of screening, follow-up or detection).

Allopurinol inhibits expression of biomarkers in adenomatous colon polyps, adjacent tissue

Allopurinol inhibits the expression of biomarkers beta-catenin and NF-kappa B, and may be a colorectal cancer-preventive compound in patients with colorectal adenomas, according to recent results.In double blind, multicenter trial, researchers randomly assigned 73 adult patients with one or more colorectal adenomas to receive either placebo (n=24) or 100 mg allopurinol (n=24) or 300 mg allopurinol (n=25) daily for four weeks before polyp removal. Ki-67 labeling index in the adenomatous tissue was assessed before and after removal, along with immunohistochemical (HC) expression of NF-kappa B, beta-catenin, topoisomerase-II-alpha and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) in polyps and the adjacent tissue.

Recent studies have addressed the link between environmental factors and the development of endocrine-related disorders, including diabetes. In the current study, researchers in Spain investigated persistent organic pollutants and the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in adults from southern Spain and found that a link exists.They looked at specific persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as organochlorine pesticides, which are often used in agriculture and public health as pest control agents, and polychlorinated biphenyls used in industrial and commercial applications.

Pneumonia risk heightened among patients with IBD

Patients with IBD, particularly Crohn’s disease, were more likely to develop pneumonia than those without IBD, with certain medications also heightening risk for the illness in a recent study.In a retrospective cohort study, researchers assessed the risk for pneumonia among 50,932 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD), 56,403 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 1,269 with unspecified IBD, along with that of 434,416 matched controls, over a median follow-up of 24 months (range 1-138 months). A nested case-control analysis also was performed, in which the medication use of 4,856 patients with IBD and pneumonia was compared with that of 18,928 matched IBD patients without pneumonia.
