CMS issues final rule on Physician Payment Sunshine Act

CMS recently announced in a press release its final rule on the National Physician Payment Transparency Program: Open Payments, also known as the Sunshine Act, aimed to increase transparency among physicians, drug and device manufacturers and health care providers. As part of the Affordable Care Act, the rule calls for manufacturers of drugs, devices, biologics and medical supplies reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Program to disclose payments made to doctors and teaching hospitals to CMS. According to the release, these manufacturers and group purchasing organizations must also report physician ownership and investments in these enterprises. This data will be publicly available on a CMS website by September 30, 2014, and entities required to report information under the rule will be able to review and correct reported data before it is released to the public. Collection of this information will begin August 1 of this year, according to the release.

tPA displayed potential as adjuvant therapy for calciphylaxis

Thrombolytic tissue plasminogen activator demonstrated the possibility of being a useful adjunctive treatment for patients with calciphylaxis, according to recent study results.Researchers at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., conducted a retrospective chart review of 15 patients with calciphylaxis (median age at diagnosis, 59 years; 11 women) who were treated between 2002 and 2010. The usually fatal thrombotic condition, affecting up to 4% of long-term dialysis patients, results in ischemia, necrosis and infarction of adipose and cutaneous tissue.

Mohs surgery safely treated nonagenarians, older patients

Patients aged 90 years and older may safely undergo Mohs micrographic surgery, according to study results.Researchers studied 214 patients in this age group (average age, 92.3 years; 50% men) who underwent Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) from July 1997 to May 2006 at a private dermatology clinic or a hospital-based outpatient clinic. Information gathered included tumor type, size, site, defect size, number of MMS stages and surgical repair. Charlson index was used to assess comorbid medical conditions. Expected length of survival and actual survival were assessed through life tables.

Tedizolid phosphate was noninferior to linezolid for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association.“The take-home message from the efficacy perspective is that, if approved, tedizolid will be the first antibiotic labeled for a fixed 6-day course of once-daily treatment for severe bacterial skin infections,” Philippe Prokocimer, MD, chief medical officer of Trius Therapeutics, told Infectious Disease News. “From a safety perspective, the study showed a lower number of gastrointestinal adverse events and a lower impact on platelets.”

Familial risk of cancer not limited to early onset in parents

Late-onset cancer in a parent is associated with increased risks of the same cancer in offspring, according to results of a prospective study.Early-onset cancers have a more pronounced hereditary component compared with late-onset cancer. Though the greatest risk factor for developing cancer is aging, little is known about whether any familial component exists in cancers that occur in old age, according to background information in the study.
